Task Example: Dry Stone Walling

Volunteers start by laying out stones in lines so it is easier to view and select the right stone.

The wall is constructed using an A-frame to ensure that the wall will be stable and enable water to run off. Large stones are placed on the ground to support the weight of the wall.

Volunteers work in small groups either side of the wall, laying stones which fit together within the A-frame.

Small gaps between the stones on either side of the wall are plugged with filling stones.

The wall is completed when large stones called toppers are placed on the top.
